Both .0058a and .0058b are the same photograph of a man wearing high boots and with fabric draped around his head sitting in grassy area. On the back of .0058a is: "Webb Miller at Makale watching artillery bombardment from Fort Galliano. Cloth on head is Arabic 'Shish'." On the back of .0058b is typed "Webb Miller at Makale watching artillery bombardment from Fort Galliano. Cloth on head is Arabic 'Shish" used against dust, flies, etc. P.S. Have'nt [sic] shaved or had clothes off for 4 days when this taken."

Webb Miller, born in 1891 in Sumnerville/Pokagon, graduate of Dowagiac High School around 1910. Miller went on to become a journalist in Chicago, covered the Pancho Villa insurrection at the Mexican border in 1915 and landed a job at United Press. Stayed with UP and covered World War I, Ghandi, Etheopian War, Spanish Civil War and came to head UP Europe. Died mysterious death in 1940. Collection from donor's niece, who received the collection from Webb Miller's daughter—in—law, Helene Miller.
