Date:
1967, c.
Description:
Man and girl, identified in 8/26/1967 Dowagiac Daily News as Margie Blackmond and her father Steve Blackmond. She is examining a ring containing one—fourth of the "Dowagiac Diamond"—— the only diamond ever found in Michigan—— being held by Mr. Blackmond. The 11 carat diamond was found by Isaac Wells around 1888 in a gravel pit near Cook Lake (2 miles north of Dowagiac)—— Wells was supplying sand to Round Oak when he came across the diamond. He took it to his friend, Niles jeweler Frank Blackmond, who had it examined by Tiffany of New York. Blackmond bought the diamond for $100. Reports suggest the diamond was in Tiffany's collection of North American gems, but it was actually cut into four stones and placed in rings, all owned by the Blackmond family (at the time of articles in 1960s—70s—— Dowagiac Diamond file).
