Description:
Trombone used by Leonard Cox, a member of the Round Oak Band, c. 1920. The instrument was manufactured by the Elkhart Musical Instrument company of Elkhart, Indiana.
(a) The trombone bell is silver—plated overall with some gold trim plating with embossed scrollwork on the upper section of the bell. There is a small dent on the upper curve of the tubing. The support tube reaches to the slide's tubing from a triangular ornamentation. The label of the manufacturer is stamped onto the upper bell of the trombone. There is an opening at the end of the shorter tubing for placement of the mouthpiece.
(b) The slide is also silver—plated overall with some gold trim plating. A spit valve is located at the bottom curve of the slide. A two—tubed clasp is located between the upper and lower tubes.
(c) The silver—plated overall with some gold trim plating mouthpiece is without ornamentation.
(d) The silver—plated overall with some gold trim plating clasp lyre is without ornamentation. There is a screw and opening for the extender at the bottom of the lyre.
(e) The narrow extender for the lyre is nickle—plated. There is a cylinder and clasp at one end for positioning on the slide.
(f) The trombone case is made of pressed wood and covered with black leatherette. Three nickle—plated clasps for closing are located at the top, middle and bottom of the case. There is a leather handle at the outside center of the case attached to two metal rings. Two buckles on either end of the handle makes for a slight adjustment for hand—size. The entire case is lined with faded, green velvet.
Dimension Details:
(a) The bell is 7 inches in diameter.The length from the bell to the first curve of tubing is 22.5 inches. The length of the supporting tube is 3.5 inches.
(b) The length of the slide is 33 inches and there is a width of 3.5 inches.
(c) The mouthpiece measures 3 inches in length and the opening is 1.5 inches in diameter.
(d) Lyre's length is 4.5 innches and the width is2 inches.
(e) The Lyre Extender is 9.75 inches in length.
(f) The trombone case measures 38.25 inches in length. The open case width is 21.75 inches at the bell—hold , 14 inches wide at the handle and 13 inches at the top clasp.

According to Dr. Jonathan Korzun, Elkhart Instrument Company opened in 1923 and low serial number indicates this was an early instrument, c. 1923—24.
