Description:
Stenotype Machine. 75 years old. Used from 1913 to 1922 by Myrtle Abendroth. Interview— April 24, 1987— Myrtle Abendroth (93 years old) was born on Illinois. She attended Browns Business College in Champagne, Ill in 1913, and took a one year course in stenotyping. She was the first to graduate in a class of only two. When she started college, she had planned to take shorthand, however her father suggested stenotyping as being the system of the future. She came to Dowagiac with her husband in 1913. He died in 1920. She went to work for Rudy Mfgr. in 1922 and worked for 13 years. She then was hired by Heddon Company on a two week trial basis and stayed for just two months short of 25 years. She started in the catolog department and eventually became the secretary for Lyle Wooster and John Heddon. In the early days, stenotypists had to furnish their own equipment. This steno machine cost Mrs. Abendroth $100.00.
