A Dowagiac History Timeline

Dowagiac has an interested history– it has evolved from a frontier town in 1848 to a manufacturing town known as ‘Furnace City’ and into a small city that has adjusted to the ‘service’ economy of the 21st century. This school tour was developed with two Dowagiac 2nd grade teachers to help meet their history curriculum. This program meets State of Michigan History benchmarks H2.0.1, H2.0.3 and H2.0.4.

Due to COVID-19, the museum is closed to the public and school tours will not occur this year. For parents homeschooling their children, we have posted the PowerPoint slide show and a document to guide the parents in leading this discussion. We recommend using the “Pop-Out” feature in the upper right corner to open a new window for each. Parents can have their children create a timeline and fill in other information they want to discuss. Parents can email the museum with any questions at museum@dowagiac.org.
